Field: Agriculture, food and food security
Subfield: Agricultural land
Details:
The indicator Agricultural irrigated land highlights the percentage of land covered by functional irrigation systems (irrespective of technology), at national level. The irrigated land translates into agricultural production being less dependent on the natural volume of precipitation, and implicitly minimizes the risk for drought to affect crops totally or partially. The indicator is calculated as the percentage of the total agricultural land covered by functional irrigation systems in total agricultural land at national level.
In the period 2003-2014 Romania’s agricultural irrigated land has decreased threefold; as a consequence, while in 2003 Romania was the regional leader, nowadays it is the penultimate country among CEE countries.
