Field: Environment and sustainable development
Subfield: Environment and waste management
Details:
This indicator measures the annual volume of waste generated in a country per inhabitant and year. The data is collected every two years, since 2004, and is presented by country. The annual generation of waste offers information on the volume of resources lost annually from processing materials in economic activities, as well as from households. The indicator is useful for improving policies in the field at the level of local administration but also at individual level, from the perspective of ecologic education and recycling. In Romania, the figures for this indicator dropped to less than half the 2008 value (reflecting the decrease of both industrial activity and consumption, because of the economic crisis). In 2014, at approximately 1.000 kg/capita, the waste generated in Romania represented half of the waste generated in Poland.
