Field: National security
Subfield: National defence
Details:
This indicator expresses the value of arms and military equipment exports, showing at the same time the real capacity of a country’s defence industry. The indicator also reflects the potential to readily support the national defence effort in the short and medium term in a potential conflict. There is no public evidence that shows the value on the internal market through the arms industry contracts, that might lead to an evaluation of the real potential of this field. The graph showing the contribution of various categories of military products in national exports (in percentages) shows which of the production capacities of the arms industry are still competitive and how they should be relaunched through investment policies and search for potential foreign beneficiaries. The comparison with neighbouring countries shows that Romania lags behind in terms of exports, while 30 years ago it was the second largest supplier of military equipment in Eastern Europe, second only to USSR.
