The Body Mass Index (BMI) is defined as the weight in kilos divided by the square of the height in meters. It is considered as the most useful indicator of obesity in adults when the only existing data is weight and height.
Adult persons can be grouped into four categories based on their BMI:
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI between 18.5 and less than 25
- overweight: BMI between 25 and less than 30
- Obese: BMI equal or greater than 30
In 2014, Romania had the lowest incidence of obesity, but also the highest incidence of overweight people. Romania is halfway to the top in terms of the percentage of normal weight people.
