EU’s Forestry Strategy (1998) has turned sustainable forest management into a fundamental objective. EU’s Forrest Action Plan of 2006 has confirmed this strategy. One of the constant controversies on Romania’s public agenda is illegal and excessive, uncontrolled deforestation, that can have a high negative impact. The indicator monitoring the available forest area, together with the evolution of the wood processing industry (secondary indicator) shows how efficient are environment policies in Romania, compared to European average. Compared to 1990, in Romania the forest area for wood processing (in thousand hectares) dropped by 17.6% in 2015, the steepest decrease in the region. At EU level, the similar area increased by approximately 2%, and in the case of Hungary, by 16.21%.
