This indicator shows the percentage of GDP allocated by the government for developing and maintaining medical services. The health budget is channelled towards investment and activities such as: building medical facilities and equipping them with modern equipment, developing national health programs (vaccination, preventing epidemics, educational programs for disease prevention, etc., maintaining and running medical facilities, managing health and (total or partial) coverage of treatment for certain serious illnesses. Although Romania has increased government expenditure on health, it is still placed among CEE countries with a low percentage of GDP spent on health. For instance, in 2016, government expenditure on health in Romania was 4%, while in Denmark it was 8.6% of GDP.
