This indicator measures all the expenditure on research and development, broken down by four sectors of performance: business enterprise, government, higher education, non-profit sector, relative to GDP. This indicator shows differences between countries and regions, respectively, with respect to research and development expenditure. Investment in research is significant for the importance of and support for innovation in that particular country or region. In the case of Romania, the percentage (0.38% of GDP in 2014) is one of the most modest among EU countries.
