This indicator offers data on the total number of patent applications for inventions to the European Patent Office (per million inhabitants), by country, regardless of whether they are granted or not. A patent is an intellectual property right, a patent title of industrial property, conferring the holder (a private individual, an enterprise or public organization) the sole right of using that invention for a number of years. A patent application can be made for an invention that meets the criteria of: novelty, inventiveness, and applicability/usefulness. This indicator reflects the innovative activity and the capacity to explore knowledge and transpose it into potential economic gains. With respect to this indicator, Romania is on one of the last positions in Europe, with a very low number of patent applications (5.11 in 2014).
