Field: Environment and sustainable development
Subfield: Environment and waste management
Details:
This indicator expresses the share of waste (generated by households) that was recycled and re-entered economy, in the total municipal waste collected, both measured in thousand tonnes. The data is collected and presented by country, since 1995. Waste management is an important component for the project of sustainable development, because it is related to the reduction of negative effects of consumption on the environment and the strategic use of waste as resource, by recycling. An increase in the recycling rate reflects a change in attitude and behaviour, in agreement with sustainable development targets. Although the rate of recycled waste has increased significantly in our country compared to 2007, the figures for this indicator in Romania were very modest in 2016 (13.3%), three times lower than EU average (45.8%).
