Field: Education and Culture
Subfield: Cultural production, trade and consumption
Details:
This indicator comprises the percentage of imports and exports of cultural goods by reference to both the EU and the rest of the world. Intra-EU trade balance can be calculated by reference to: a. total cultural trade with EU member states, b. total cultural trade extra EU and c. total cultural trade with the rest of the world.
Trade in cultural goods reflects the dynamics of a country’s cultural sector, namely its mostly productive areas. Only the most competitive and notorious products are demanded on the international market and are imported and exported. Thus, the share of exports in a country’s trade shows the capacity of firms to produce for the international cultural market, while imports show if that country is a market for multicultural consumption.
