Digital society

Digital society represents the result of revolutionary changes in the sphere of new technology and communication means. The assimilation and promotion of these new technologies represents a fundamental condition for a country’s development in the current context. In this respect, Europe 2020 Strategy proposes “a digital agenda for Europe.”

We have selected the following main indicators: households with Internet access, percentage of adult individuals who regularly use the internet and the use of internet by type of economic organisation and public institution. These indicators allow us to evaluate a society’s digitalization. An important indicator refers to the population’s digital competencies, which signals the capacity to adapt to the evolution of digital communication technologies. [read more]

Regarding the number of households with access to the internet, Romania has taken spectacular steps in recent years. 70% of households have access to the internet, a good level if limiting factors are taken into consideration (poor infrastructure, population size in rural areas, the population’s purchasing power, etc.). However, digital society develops slowly in Romania, compared to other European countries. We refer to organisations’ and institutions’ willingness to adapt to the demands of the digital society.
